Controlling your costs is crucial for the overall economics of your cloud investment. From thinking in CapEx investment models and transitioning to OpEx instead changes the mindset not only in the finance department but most of all it should change the IT departments way of working.
Switching to pay-as-you-go changes how to view and manage your assets. Traditionally (for example in your own datacenter) the more servers or usage you had in your hardware the more the investment was worth, this made the IT departments to often use maximum capacity in the deployed workloads.
Now, the IT department needs to have a close cooperation with the business and really understand the applications to be able to accommodate them in the right size at the right time. Controlling cost in the cloud is to understand the business, the people, the software and the technology.
Understanding these things then gives the opportunity to work with licensing, reservation of capacity or re-architecting applications.
